This hot-of-the-press article is worth a read.

It essentially applies to third party apps where you will, in the future, need to turn on two-factor authentication to use them with iCloud.

Thankfully I do not use third party apps for syncing with iCloud. However, there are many folks who do use a third party app - "Google Calendar" and "Google Contacts" come to mind. As the article states, this is a mistake on Apple's part and I'll bet there will be plenty of blow back as users begin to get locked out of their accounts.
