Well it is all going to depend on the information you have not supplied.
What Mac operating system? What are you going to connect it to when it is in the external case ~ Mac or PC? If a PC what software are you proposing to use to access the drive and read the files?

this hard drive is the same one that i have a thread for forgotten password. I am not sure of the os that is on the hd. I would be using another mac to retrieve files not sure about what program to use or really to much on how to go about it. i am more failure with pc and i am trying to learn macs a little more.

Why don't you first try to change the password and then come back if you fail doing that. Let's not mix the threads. Extracting data from a hard drive is easy with the right tools.
