iMac 27" 2017 32 G ram MB Pro 2012 16 G ram iPad Air ser 5 2017 iPhone 11 xs max 256.
Where do I find the hard drive formatting option on an iMac running El Capitan please? I want to format an external drive to use as a backup! :\

Silver M1 iMac 512/16/8/8 macOS 11.6
It is in Disk Utility. Connect the external and go to Appkiucations > Utilities > Disk Utility, select the drive and format Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and select GUID partition map.

Don't skip the "select GUID partition map" that Harry mentioned that's usually hiding via the "Option" button.
