I want to use Time Machine to back up the photo files that are stored on an external hard drive to a second external drive. I have been struggling to figure out how to do this. I'm not great at the technical use of computers. Hope someone can help.

Although you could use Time Machine to do what you want, the better and easier way is to use cloning software. Carbon Copy Cloner (https://bombich.com) and SuperDuper (http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html) both have trial versions which are fully functional for a period of time. You can use either one to clone or copy (backup) the photo files from one external hard drive to another.

I'm not aware of any way to get Time Machine to back up anything other than the boot drive, Charlie. If you have a link or something as to how to do that, let me know. I agree with you that CCC or SD (or Chronosync) is an easier/better way to to do that.

Member chas_m is correct. Time Machine backs up from your boot drive to an external or Time Capsule. CCC or SuperDuper would be the correct way to do it. I have never used Chronosync and do not know if they have a trial version you could test.

I haven't tried the method in this video but here's one link I found (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0l4vJvtzvbU). haven't tried this method because CCC or SuperDuper seem to work simply enough for me.
