One I often recommend is Find Any File, very handy and useful, especially when Spotlight can't find what you want.

Yes, a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper backup software in addition to the built in Time Machine backup software. There is no other software more important than a good backup application.

+1!!! I can't believe I missed that but maybe because my CCC backup has just been so automatic all these years that I hardly notice.
