hi, I'm trying to install windows on my macbook pro A1286 mid 2010

I just got it from a friend and mine does not have a optical drive.

It has a SSD (mac) + HDD (data) and i think the optical drive is replaced with the HDD.

Now when I start bootcamp, it keeps asking me to insert a DVD of windows.

I have the latest OS X installed

Bootcamp says that it can only be installed from a internal Optical drive, not even a external one.

Any idea's?

According to Mactracker, MBP up until 2012 had optical drives. Do you mean yours is broken? If so you will have to get it replaced as you must use the optical drive in models that came with them.

As Harry pointed out, you will not be able to install Windows. What you need to do is remove the hard drive from the optical slot and temporarily replace it with the DVD drive, install Windows, and then you can once more remove the DVD drive and put back the hard drive. Or you can do some googling for a work around. There is at least one work around but I don't remember what it is off hand so you'll need to search for it.
