Something weird going on

My old iMac is slowing down several times a day. I clean it with TuneupMyMac and CleanMyMac 2 and it recovers, but only for a short time. I am using OS 10.10.1. The processor is a 2.66 GHz intel. Can anyone help?

Applications like the one you suggested, Mackeeper etc are disastrous so uninstall now. Google the name.

I'm surprised it's only "several times a day" with that crapware installed. The ONLY cleaner you need is Onyx from here. Get the version for Yosemite. Run it once now, then again in a year. That's all you need for cleaning.

That warning is from Gatekeeper because you downloaded it from the web. Just acknowledge the warning and let it install. You won't see the message again and Onyx is very trustworthy.

You mentioned Tuneupmymac and Cleanmymac. Both are not needed and will just slow you down. If you have any Antivirus installed, I'd recommend uninstalling that, too. If you feel the need for A/V, ClamXav is the best for OS X and doesn't degrade your machine performance because it only runs when YOU want it to. Since there are no viruses for Mac right now, you don't need to run it unless you want to save your Windows friends from getting something in an email you got from another Windows user and forwarded to them. That's about all any of the AV software find.

There is one other good set of packages--Adblock+ and/or Ghostery. You can search for them. They block popup ads and nasty things that hijack your browser.

Because Onyx is downloaded from the internet Gatekeeper will flag it as from an unidentified developer. That is ok just go ahead and install it. You may have to put in your admin password or possible go to system preferences -> Security and Privacy -> General. If you have tried to install Onyx there should be a warning. Click on the lock in the lower left corner, put in your password, and ok the install.

Once installed, open onyx, put in your admin user name & password then run everything under the automation tab

Crapware: Mackeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUpMyMac. Basically Onyx will do what they claim to do only better.

If you have all that junk installed, you really need to start reading this forum more.

After you've removed all of it, how much free space do you have and what size is the drive?

And describe the slow downs - for example when I open xyz app it takes 3 seconds - 30 seconds - 3 minutes... for it top open - use a watch and time it.

Did anyone notice he has a core 2 duo macintosh...

And why didn't anyone ask the most important question of all.

How much ram does your machine have

and how much free hard drive space.

Under "storage" I read "484.94 GB free of 499.25 GB"
Under "memory" I read, in the blue box upper left, 2 GB installed, then the writing says "Your Mac contains 2 memory slots, each of which accepts a 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory module"
I installed OnyX yesterday and ran it, so the computer should be clean now.
While I have your eye; I downloaded AdBlock and Ghostery yesterday but don't know how to add the extensions to Safari

Besides the "crapware" software installs…running Yosemite (10.10) with only 2gig of ram will also contribute to the problem.

This "small" amount of ram would have been a problem with older OS version as well. Generally speaking. The newer the OS…the worse & worse this 2gig of ram will perform.

Per message you sent. Yes if possible…you need to upgrade the ram on this computer. If you're not sure what your upgrade options are. We need to know the exact iMac model you have.

I have a 20" early 2008 iMac, SN QP8490PMZE3

An Early 2008 iMac (2 ram slots) can be upgraded to as much as 6gig of ram (4gig + 2 gig). The 6gig upgrade is usually fairly expensive...so most folks opt. for the 4gig upgrade (2gig + 2gig).

Is 4 GB enough for Yosemite?

4 GB runs just fine under 10.10 here - although I would never suggest anyone buy a new Mac with less than 8 any longer.

I am using a 4GB (non-upgradeable) MacBook Air and while Yosemite seems to be using all 4 GBs all the time, I do not have the memory issues I had under 10.8 & 10.9. Yosemite is much better at handling memory (handing off to the apps that need it instead of Safari hogging it all to itself). I have been able to eliminate the use of a memory cleaner under 10.10 that I could not get away from under 10.9 in particular. I was also having to reboot my machine every 2-3 days under 10.9 - 10.10 is also permitting me to go back to my habit of never shutting down/rebooting except when I want to (perhaps once every month or two).

While that is the case, for that '08 iMac and plan on keeping it for awhile yet, I'd get the 6GB if you can afford that instead of the 4GB.
