What model iPad?
Did you try a USB connection to your computer and in iTunes try and view or sync?

If the battery is allowed to deplete COMPLETELY, it will initially behave "dead" for some time even after plugged in to the mains. Try charging it overnight and see if that makes a difference.

Any chance of damage, loose connection or dirt in the charging port?

Try cleaning out the dock connector with compressed air as well as using a different cable and usb charger block that is known to work and leave it plugged in for at least an hour.
