If I had a external usb ssd connected to my mac when I try to install osx (in this case it is mavericks). When it asks me what I want to install it on will the external usb ssd show up. And then, when its all set up will the macintosh HD and the applications be the external usb ssd? So the internal hard drive basically become redundant and everything runs off the external usb ssd?

Why would you want to use a fast SSD externally? By doing that you're going to slow it down to the speed of USB.

To answer your question: Yes you can do it that way if you wish.
