I made the switch from PC to a MBA. Now I'm trying to find the best network and storage solution. I'm a uverse subscriber so will be using this solution in combination with AT&T gateway. We have several apple devices including ipads, iphones, and Apple TV.

I have done some research to evaluate options and have narrowed it down to the time capsule or combining an 802.11ac router with the WD My Cloud external hard drive. I like the idea of keeping everything apple to simplify setup, operation, updates, etc. On the other hand, the My Cloud storage solution is attractive due to the added flexibility to access files remotely in addition to file sharing and backup for mobile devices and Apple TV.

Recommendations?

I would use the TC for Time Machine only and use the WD My Cloud for everything else.

Thanks OSXX. So you recommend having a TC in addition to WD MyCloud even though Time Machine can back up to the WD MyCloud? Is there a specific benefit to TC that leads you to that preference? Thanks again for your input.

If you want to keep everything wireless and during my calls to Apple Support they have always maintained using a drive for only Time Machine and get a secondary drive for other use.
I tried using a partitioned drive connected to a AEBS and for the most part it worked but not trouble free.
If wireless is something you don't have to have get an external drive but its nice to have wireless backup to set and forget rather than mount and unmount an external drive if you are on the move.
