iTunes 11 will not recognise iPhone 5 but will iPad 2?

iTunes has always worked perfectly for me. Except now it wont pick up my iPhone 5. When i plug my iPhone into my MacBook Pro with retina to starts charging but nothing from iTunes. If i plug in my iPad however it works fine. Brought a new lead and still not working.. Very fustrating.. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Has the iPhone 5 ever been "paired" (not the right word, but you know what I mean) with any other machine? Even a former owner's?

Nope the iPhone has never been used on any other machines. I have tried reinstalling iTunes even reset the phone back to factory settings and it still will only charge when plugged in. I am a developer and currently doing my degree in computer science so this is rather annoying!
