Second HDD Failing

Hey guys,

My HDD is failing again because this happened over a year ago and i had to replace it although it was in a far worse state (macbook pro pretty much unusable). Could you take a look at the pic and tell me if you think its in bad shape?

Why does a Harddrive fail like this? and am i just unlucky considering its the second time in the space of a year..

Well all hard drives fail and wear out. They are pretty fragile devices. Sometimes it happens they are dead when brand new in the pack. A solid knock or drop of the packaging can cause this. Contact the supplier as most offer at least a three year warranty, and often five years. Have you tried Repair Disk?

If running Snow Leopard boot from the DVD to do this, for Lion and Mountain Lion, go into recovery mode and carry out the test.

The SMART utility is usually good at predicting drive failures. I have had a brand new drive right out of the box that was DOA, so who knows? Anyway, the important thing for you right now is to backup everything. I would use Time Machine and cloning software for double safety. Like Harry said, the drive is probably still under warranty. Contact the manufacturer and ask for a RMA.
