External Display Issues

Hey guys, I hope this is the right place. I have a mid 2010 macbook pro and i have an cord to plug into the HDMI on my Sony TV. The TV is 32" 1080p. When i connect the mac book the only way i can get the image to fit the entire screen is to adjust the under scan and set it to 720p. Is there any way to get full 1080p to actually fit the screen and not have two black side bars?
