I don't own a Mac yet, but getting one very soon and I've been reading the forums and everyone is talking about Rosetta. What is it and what does it do for me?! Thanks.

The latest macs (iMac core duo & Macbook Pro) have a different chip type in them than previous ones. (Intel Core Duo - the old ones had PowerPC G4's & G5's).

Rosetta is a technology than "translates" programs written for the old chips, so they'll run on the new ones. Currently most apps are being redesigned to run on both chips, as all new software will.

It is more or less unnoticeable for most tasks.

So you have a choice when you buy your Mac:

PowerPC based: All software is native
Intel based: PowerPC software running in Rosetta will run 33-66% slower, Native software will run up to 400% faster

Im personally sticking with PowerPC until most all software that I use has been translated into Intel native binaries.. so probably a year or more before I buy an Intel Mac.

Like Murlyn, that is why I purchased the quad G5. When it comes time for me to upgrade, all of the quarks and bugs will be worked out of the Intel Mac.
