It should work. I have a Linksys WRT54G that I use to wirelessly network my Powerbook and my wife's PC. No problems. Connecting wirelessly or through the router on either machine.

When your desktop is hardwired through the router can you access the router through the web browser? (http://192.168.1.1) If you can check the settings and make sure it is set to Gateway and DHCP is on.
