I could be wrong on this but swear the iPhone 5's case is a solid casting and it's the front that comes off more like the older iPhones.

You've managed to tear up a brand new iPhone 5 to the point where you need to replace the entire back case?!
The only advice I have is to take it back to Apple. They will advise you on what can be done about this.

Liked the summary. Having the case more rugged makes a lot of sense. It might even save on cases. Good point about the lightning connector being so complex and implying expensive repair costs for associated components.
Perhaps looking at the inside is s important as looking at the outside.
