For some reason, I am unable to erase all data/restore my hard drive for TM

I want to wipe my TM external hard drive and start again (for some reason there are now 2 partitions :S ) but when I go to disk utility, I can't click erase or anything. I've disabled the disk from being used as a TM backup but still nothing. Can anybody help?

The first thing you should do is run a verify on the external hard drive to see if it's working OK. If a second partition suddenly appeared, that says there's a problem with the drive.
