I am trying to use a picture of myself standing in the desert for my avatar photo. They allow 6kb. In Iphoto I have tried all that i know how to do to get the photo within those guidelines but no success, editing/cropping ends up with a blurry mess.

If you're talking about the avatar guidelines here, it's 100 by 100 pixels or 68.4 KB (whichever is smaller), not 6 KB.

6KB isn't a lot of space...for anything. Are you sure that 6 KB is the limit?

Displays a small graphic image below your details in posts. Only one image can be displayed at a time, its width can be no greater than 100 pixels, the height no greater than 100 pixels, and the file size no more than 6 KB.

From their profile instructions, a misprint?

While it's certainly possible to get a picture that small and still have it be of reasonable quality (TattooedMac's is only 2 KB), setting a limit that low is a bit draconian. However, seeing as how it's possible, that 6 KB limit could very well be a real one.

1. Drag a copy of the picture out to the desktop.

2. Open it in Preview.

3. Resize it to 100x100. Save as JPG.

That should do the job.
