I just purchased a iMac G5 with an AirPort card already built in. My Titanium G4 Powerbookalso has a card as well. Are the AirPort cards compatible with a generic wireless router so I can link the two machines together or must I by an AirPort Extreme base station?

The Airport cards in Macs work on the exact same standards as any other WiFi card. So pretty much any router will work. I prefer a router with an SPI Firewall as it's a lot better HardWare firewall, but anything will work as long as it works! In other words is not broken or set up incorrectly! :spook:

can only agree

yeah i'm with ya on that one. we have d-link and netgear at work, no probs. (infact, easier on a mac than a pc) my mate has some BT (national telecom network provider here in blighty) unbranded junk and even that works.

Has anyone successfully extended an non-Airport Extreme wireless network with an Airport Express?

I have a Belkin router but cannot seem to get my AP Express to extend network or print wirelessly...

Any ideas??

Straight from the Apple's mouth…
http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/

footnote #5 – AirPort Express can extend the range only of an AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express wireless network.
