I have a sony (with a tape) camcorder that i-movie is not compatible with is there anything I can do that will make it work on the iMac

What makes you think it is not compatible, specifically?

I mean, you could be right. Sony are pretty awful about stuff like this, but all the tape camcorders they made that I'm aware of used Firewire (though they called it iLink), which is very compatible with iMovie.

Good morning I talk to Sony and they told me that Mac does not recognize all sony, they told me to buy a firewire from apple to see if that works if not I'm hooped it will not work at all.

You can call them back and tell them they are officially ignorant or lying. I had a sony camcorder for years that plugged straight into a Mac and worked fine with iMovie.

I have no idea what you mean by "they told me to buy a firewire from Apple" but perhaps the translation is that they are telling you that if you will connect the iLink connector to your Mac VIA a Firewire cable it will work. Just like mine did.
