iPad 'dead'...

My iPad suddenly went dead while charging. I can't reset it and it won't register when i plug it onto my Mac and start iTunes. Is it truly dead and does that mean i won't be able to retrieve my data/apps (for those that i didn't back up on my pc)?

how low was the battery before plugging it in?

could have just powered down if it was completely dead – let it charge an hour then try to turn it back on. If nothing then take it to Apple, maybe they'll change the battery out and you can recover your data, unless they swap it out then you're kinda screwed.
