Something else is going on because VMWare Fusion does nothing to alter the boot sector of your hard drive. Are you sure you installed Windows XP in a virtual machine and not a separate partition with Boot Camp?

Definitely just a virtual in VMware, I did notice too late when I was shutting the Mac down that there was a check box asking if I wanted windows to start at start up?

Again, something is wrong. That warning you received will only display if you're dual booting OS X and Windows XP. I can't tell you what's going on but it looks to me like you may have to reinstall.

One more question.... Did you have XP running previously using Boot Camp and then used it to create a virtual machine within Fusion?
