In a previous post, I talked about having a wireless modem/router & using it with the new
imac I'll be getting soon. I should have asked if the new imacs have built-in modems.
On my old computer, I only had to plug in the cable that came into my house from my provider. I didn't need this external modem/router. This is what I was trying to find out.
Hope this makes sense.

Thanks,

Jim Halford

What was your old computer? Who is your Internet provider?

No modern computer has a built in DSL or Cable modem.

As far as I can remember, only AT&T provided a DSL PCI modem card which when installed in a PC (and their software installed) allowed a direct DSL connection. And that was back in the Dark Ages before real high speed broadband was available.

I owned that modem. It was in an older HP Desktop that someone gave me. AT&T had given them the modem. That is ancient.

I hope Harry is not on the right track and he means Dial up! What I was thinking is a Network cable out of the wall that went into his RJ-45 port.

Sorry we did have someone ask about dialup modems in a new iMac and thought same question. Your Linskys will work fine connecting to the Ethernet port or via an Airport card.

It sounds like your asking if your IMac will work with your wireless router and the answer is yes. Macs come with built-in wireless.

I couldn't quite tell if the gist of his question was WiFi or an Ethernet port, as he mentioned both wireless and a plug. In either case he should be fine.
