I'm looking to buy a TV tuner, Not sure whether I should get a USB model or one that just goes into my monitor... any suggestions or experiences would be helpful.

I'd get a usb model..
That way you can also use your mac to record tv shows and burn them to dvd.
Elgato's EyeTV software is pretty decent, so I'd recommend getting hardware that comes bundled with that...
