I have an iMac 21.5 display Processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 and I want to play my Xbox360 through a Mini DisplayPort Converter, but the advertising is for a 27 inch iMac models only. I have a mini port for an external screen but I don't want to purchase one if it wont work. Can you help me with an answer please.

The reason it states for a 27" iMac only is because that model has both an input and output video port. The 21" iMac does not. Sorry.

Why does it need both as the boxes advertised for this purpose only have an HDMI input from the xBox and an output to the iMac??

You can not input video to an iMac 21" model. It only has an output port - video out only. As I stated above, the 27" model iMac has both ports.

Now I understand.
Thanks CHSCAG.
Pity the sales guy didn't tell me that before I purchased it
