help please

just got a set of external speakers for my mac and when playing my itunes through them there is a lot of static. Symptom doesn't change when i unplug the speakers and plug in my headphones. Plug in my ipod to the speakers and the static goes away. anyone know why this is happening?

Long shot, but have you updated iTunes to 10.5.2? There was an issue recently where playback was messed up by such static.

The latest update for iTunes fixes this issue.

Sounds like the external speakers are not properly grounded. Not sure what you can do about that.
