I'm having some trouble getting Windows 7 to install onto my external HDD. I've been playing around with the formatting and bootcamp but to no avail.

G'day and welcome to the forums.

Microsoft does not permit Windows to be installed on an external drive. One of their anti-piracy measures.

Neither Boot Camp nor MS will allow the installation of XP, Vista. or Win 7 to an external hard drive. As Harry stated, it's a restriction imposed by MS.

It is possible to make my external hdd appear to be internal to windows?

No. If you must run Windows on an external hard drive it can be done by using virtual software: Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox.
