If I explain my situation I will be very grateful for any suggestions.
I started bootcamp and made a 15gb partition for windows xp professional sp2 to be installed on. I inserted the disk and got To selecting the partition for it to be installed on I selected the one named bootcamp and it started to copy windows files once this finished It restarted the computer and this whole process happened again. It never asked me which file system I wished to format.

Can anyone see what has gone wrong here.
many thanks.

I believe what happened is that you pressed "enter" or "return" when the first install finished and the prompt came back letting you know that you can boot the disk. When that prompt comes up, do nothing. The installation process will continue to the blue screen where you'll be able to format the partition. After that XP will continue as per normal. Remember, your Mac has no way to eject the disk during the process. Only after Windows is installed that you can eject the disk.
