Sprool - I love that! What lens/body etc did you use? Thanks! Its just basic entry level Canon EOS1000D and 18 - 55 kit lens, manual exposure mode, manual focus.
f7 amd 1/200 sec,
ISO200 + remote triggered flash off to the side.
Pyrex baking dish with graph paper underneath and behind it. Couple of drops of yellow and red food dye. Freezer bag of water suspended by my tripod over the bowl and a pinprick in the bottom of the bag. I took about 50 shots and kept about 8 or them. Some sharpening and definition increase in iphoto was all the pp used.

Had issues uploading because of the file size limit. Ended up uploading it to my Tumblr account and then saving the picture, which dropped it from 3.1MB to 700KB. Awesome.

Sorry but I can't see the photo at all

Doug, you said Cats. I see one! :D Is that misses DougB?

CD? I have MANY of them. Know them well! :D Still prefer them for high quality audio reproduction. Do I see some LP's in the Top left? Have many of those also including some Sheffield Direct to Disk's that sound AMAZING.

Doug b
01-17-2012, 02:51 AM
Technically, I said "kitty's"!

Yep, that's Mrs. B... in all of her "having just woken up" glory! And good eye.. those are just a few of my (mostly new) 180g. vinyl pressings up there. I only wish I was able to play them. Problem is that my apartment is very old, and leans like the Tower Of Pisa. I have shims on pretty much everything that isn't heavy enough to bolt its self down, and the walls probably aren't sturdy enough for me to mount Birch wood and brackets to hold my turntable.

The other problem with the building being old is that when big trucks go down the boulevard (which we live right on), everything shakes! I love my neighborhood, but can't wait until we move because of those issues.

Doug

dtravis7
01-17-2012, 04:23 AM
That building sounds scary! Is it safe I hope?

Agreed, when a truck drove by, your turntable would probably skip all over the LP! I have lived in houses with very shaky floors and had many issues with my Turntables. In one the back of the fireplace was in my music room and I mounted a shelf on the fireplace brick to keep the turntable from being shaken by that shaky floor!

RavingMac

Nice pic Doug!

I'm fond of cats too and I also have a bunch of SeeDees around the place, though not a lot of vinyl. My linear tracking arm turntable bit the dust several years ago and I never got around to replacing it.

Well, it's pretty much thanks to my Dad that I made this photo.
He suggested at 10:52 PM that I try photograph the moonlight lake, so I bundled up and went out to see what I could do :)
Not having ever tried something like this before I just dialed in what I thought would work and hoped for the best.

EXIF
Camera: Nikon D7000
Lens: 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 Nikkor
Program: Manual
Exposure: 13 seconds
Aperture: f/3.5
ISO Speed: 100
Focal Length: 18 mm
Capture Time: 22:52:59

This alone produced a rather dark looking RAW image.

I probably should have exposed longer so I wouldn't have had to to re-adjust so much in Lr afterwards but for some reason that silly display
on the back of the camera always looks better than what you see on the computer!

In Lr,
I bumped the exposure from 0 to 2
Reduced Blacks from 5 to 2
Increased the Brightness from 50 to 100
Increased the contrast by from 25 to 50
Then I played with the Tone Curve so long until I was satisfied :)

PS: Exiftool is awesome, using this command in a folder of images
exiftool -model -LensModel -ExposureProgram -WhiteBalance -ExposureTime -FNumber -ISO -FocalLength -FocalLengthIn35mmFormat ./*.jpg >> exif.txt

Produces this output. Almost forum ready!

All things considered, you did a good job of recovering things in LR. Have you downloaded LR Beta 4 yet? it's got some excellent enhancements going on for it such as a much improved highlight slider (takes the place of the recovery slider) and all of the other adjustments are able to be brushed in selectively. (such as highlights, noise removal etc.. )

In regard to checking the LCD on the back of your D7000... it will never be reliable if you're shooting RAW. That little preview is a tiny jpg that is attached to the RAW file and uses the in camera settings, but is still limited by the actual lcd its self in terms of what you see.

Use the meter and get to know it well. Use the histogram and get to know it just as well. Interestingly, everything on the LCD of my D300 is darker than the NEF always turns out by at least one stop or more. Also remember that when you're shooting in the dark towards a landscape, it's probably better to spot meter. That will at least give you the most accurate baseline to work with since most of the sky is dark.

Good thing you used the base ISO, or else you would have pulled out some pretty nasty noise!

Doug

P.S. Did you know that you can just drop an image or a series of images into terminal (after having launched terminal and after having typed "exiftool" followed by a space) and you'd get the same results?

Very nice image, McYukon!

You've inspired me to go ahead and share one of my own~

This is Valley Oak, Planet Venus. From my film days, captured with Pentax 6x7 on ISO 50 Velvia. 10 seconds @ f/8. No filters, no Photoshop.

Back then, there were no histograms and RAW capture. We had to rely on straight TTL average metering and experience, and then hold our breath until the transparencies came back from processing :) Shooting with digital is SO much more fun. Like Doug b says, we have everything we need now to capture great images on the spot and be confident in the results. Keep up the great work, McYukon!

**not sure how to upload the full size image other than attaching it~~

Holy mother of... That's awesome Fritz! Those colors are without a doubt something you can't just bake into a digital file. Velvia no less! I'd love to shoot film exclusively, to be honest. But it's danged expensive. Though I do love that it makes you think a lot more about what you're shooting and how...

Did you scan the image yourself?

Thanks, Doug!

Image was drum-scanned at West Coast Imaging which just happens to be in my backyard in Oakhurst, CA.

I REALLY wish that shooting film wasn't so expensive. I don't shoot with it much anymore and I miss the resolution for large prints. But the convenience of digital is so amazing. To be able to shoot something, take it home and view it, process it and have it ready for print and/or publication in a matter of an hour or two is incredible! At least for those of us that grew up shooting film.

When i spent 3 yrs working holiday in the UK my first port of call was the little village of Kenilworth sort of in between Leamington Spa and Coventry. They had a old Castle (Kenilworth Castle) and very old Graves. Loved going there and doing HeadStone Scrapings with charcoal onto paper. . . .
This bought back memories (ThankYou :) ) and when i was there it was hard to fathom that this grave was here before Australia was even founded. Felt out of this world.

Nice shot BTW

Just got a new (used) 35mm f2 AIS nikon lens (manual focus), as well as a little device that is used to block the on camera flash when using it for commander mode when using off camera speedlights (blocks whatever little light is emitted from the onboard flash) and wanted to test them out. This was the result. Bounced a single SB-600 off of my wall and got in Lilly's face @ f2 ISO 400. Only added a bit of sharpening and a touch of vibrance. Also slightly tweaked levels. All done in LR 3 and literally took less than 3 minutes.

My wife had her hand on Lilly's head, and was pulling her ears back. Focus is on her left eye.

I went to Kenilworth a few months back! It's a lovely place, that's steeped in history! Here's a rather processed shot (I was playing about with PS, I'm aware it's far from perfect as I'm still getting to grips with layers, but I thought I'd share it!) :)

Doug - That shot you took of the guy having a smoke, is brilliant! Did you have to ask his permission to take his photo? As he doesn't look like the kind of chap that takes too kindly to having his photo taken!

Well done everyone, some classics on here.

This just captured a moment for me..a group of former workmates waiting for the ski-lift the morning after the night before. I call them the Parbold Desperados and the shot was taken in Les Gets in the French Alps.

Thanks Chuck! I never ask for permission, as that will always kill any kind of spontaneity or natural moments. I do however, employ certain techniques that usually tend to throw off any suspecting subjects, and they either go back to their business or simply walk away unknowing. Of course, you could always use a telephoto lens, but I always feel like that's totally creepy and impersonal. I was using a 105mm for that one, so I was fairly close to the gentleman.

And my cat is anything ever than angry, she's a sweatheart. It's just that my wife's hand is on her head, and is pulling her ears and eyes back a bit! You can't see her hand because the DOF is so shallow. But the bokeh is delish!

Lots of lovely photos in this thread!

I am a very, very, VERY amateur photographer, or rather, photography enthusiast? I have wanted a “proper” camera for years, I finally got one when I bought myself a “Nikon J1” – I LOVE it! I just enjoy taking photos for fun, I don't think mine are very good but I still really enjoy it. I am not very good at editing so I haven't really tried it much.

Here is a photo a took a few weeks ago around dusk at the airport, reminds me of a scene from a zombie or apocalypse movie or something, lol. Creeeppyyyy.

VERY nice. I believe the F3 is my all-time favorite camera body.

I wanted to shoot film again, and also wanted something discrete for street shooting. My only problem with it right now is that some of my glass can be a bit top heavy. The body is so small that it can hurt if I hold it wrong when I'm focusing. I'd like to add the grip to it, but that would kill the whole discrete thing... Otherwise, it's a great piece of kit, and I can't wait until I get the negatives to scan. Who knows when that will be though... can't just shoot all willy nilly with film, right? $$ !

Karen, love the mood and feel of that shot. And to all you animal shooters, great job...

Here's one from that new, but very old Nikon F3 with the first roll of Fujifilm color. Unfortunately, the lab that developed the roll messed it up horribly. Burn marks, scratches and such. Never again will I bring film to them. Anyway, this is the very first shot from that roll *I haven't shot film for YEARS and when I did I was never very good to begin with*. The vignetting on the shot is natural. I had a lens hood on that belonged to a 105mm but was shooting with a 35mm so that is the effect. Only real exif here is ISO/ASA 400 and I forget what the aperture was set to. Likely F2

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e237/funkytreasure/Mac%20Forums%20Photo%20showcase/AlbumCover_.jpg?t=1340515458

No post processing btw. Oh, and I scanned the negatives myself with the Epson V500. Didn't even calibrate the scanner.

:) Yeah, I do allot of stacking, flowers and others subjects. This one is comprised of six pictures, I stacked them in Helicon and then tidied it up in PS replacing the background for better effect. Shot with; Sony A77, Tamron 90mm Macro - ISO50, f/5.6, 1/200, Lighting was controlled using a Sony 43AM with a Globe Modifier attached.

Thanks for the details. I am looking for a macro lens right now. I have narrowed it down to the Tamron 90 or the Nikon 105. The only negative I have read about the Tamron is the way it extends, but image quality seems to be as good or better than the Nikon.

Any thoughts on these two lenses?

I cannot comment on the Nikkor lens as I have not used it but from pictures I have seen, its a lovely bit of glass. I have only had the Tamron for a month, it was to replace my 17 year Minolta 100mm Macro which broke a few months back.

The DOF of the Tamron is not too different to the 100mm and the colours produced are pretty spot on. To me the Tamron is slightly slower as focusing than my old Minolta but its dam sharp even at f/2.8.

I am in Canada...West coast. So about half a World away I think.
I think I am going with the Tamron as it appears to be a leader in image quality. Build quality and AF speed is not on par with the Nikon but I treat things gently focus in M for most close up work I have ever done.

It is also less than half the price.

Any special tricks for selecting the flower for background replacement?

Ah... a fair distance then :)

When setting up for a stack, I try and have as much contract between the subject and background as possible to make selection and cutting out easier. Alternatively, if I'm happy with the way the background is coming out in camera, I swap the WB to Tungsten to create a more pleasing background. I shoot one shot at around f/11 focusing in the center so that the background can simply be merged in PS.

LOL! After all these years, I think my wife has given up on me when it comes to buying new "toys". One thing that helps is my son is also a "toy" collector and sends his opinions to back me up. "The boys have to have their toys". :)

Hi, it was taken at south lakes wild animal park (which i occasionally do some work for)

Thats a great tiger photograph (i don't "shoot" animals .... only people :D ) however if you're up for a bit of cc then my only qualm would be increase the dof (up the aperture) this side of the face is sharp but by the time you get to the nose you are starting to lose focus.... Other than that a beautiful photo.

Here's one of my early tiger pics

Thanks for the reply and the CC, much appreciated. It was a tricky day for shooting, really very dull and I was having to shoot at 5.6 and high ISO (3200 on this shot) to cope. Thankfully the new (first time out actually)Pentax camera I was using seems to do exceptionally well at high ISO. I will make note of what you said though.
South Lakes is one of the places on our checklist to visit. More so now :)

This is a pic from Scotney Castle in Kent, taken yesterday. As you can see, we had a perfect day, weather wise.

Nice shot mate. Loved the Castles when i was over there. I did steal the image though if thats OK to chuck in my Library BUT i did use SnapHeal to get rid of that thing just to the right of the Dome ;) It was annoying me looking at it with such a gorgeous blue sky :)

Ah the wall? Yeah. If you look on my Facebook page there are loads of pics to look at, feel free to borrow :)

Nah mate i love the wall thats in the image. It really does add to it. If you go look at the tower on the right, then the little glass dome at the very top, then 12mm to the direct right, there is a blotch, bird, kite, balloon, blimp or something that is barely visible. NOT the wall lol

Excellent, never been there even though we don't live far away.

Here's one of a stunning sunset over Norfolk fields ..

Cheers :)

So there is. I need a new laptop, this screen sucks :) I will look at my camera too, because that looks like a dust speck. Annoying, new camera!

Nice Hugh, you should go to Scotney, lovely place. Free this weekend with a voucher from the NT webpage. May be a bit short notice :)

Nice idea, but unfortunately we've just come back from Norfolk and as usual there's a pile of things to do ... we will go there sometime as I think it's quite cheap to get in normally.

Cheers :)

Yes, if you don't go into the main house it's not bad, and to be honest, you aren't missing much in there, the castle part is the main thing, and that's all part of the gardens.

Yea thanks Kev. . . .. I took it on y iPad Mini with ProCamera HD but could only get the image @ 480x640 (might need to play with settings), where as Camera+ shoots @ 2448x3264 ?? So a little disappointed or i have more looking into it lol but shoots video spectacularly in 1080P.
Ive used this image for MacWorld Aust iSnap iOS competition every month they run it .

Appreciate the comment :)

Just got a new superzoom -- a Canon SX50 HS as a gift! I was thinking about heading to DSLR land but I do love the superzooms and have gotten lots of good pics with em. Sure they're not quite the quality level of DSLRs but I make do all right -- and save myself a few thousand in lens addition in the process!

Here's a shot of Vancouver from Granville Island, downsized by 2/3rds for this forum:
