I want to start using non-enclosed external hard drives. Is this the hardware I need?

I "assume" you mean buying "bare" drives and not put them in an enclosure and want to know how to connect them to your computer?

Just based on the Thermaltake name, I'd say that would be an ok device. It is eSATA and USB only.

I have one of these quad interface units from OWC. It has eSATA, FW800, FW400 and USB 3. You can save a few by getting one of the older quads with USB 2.

Have a couple of different brands of universal adapters also, incl'g this one.
