Question about the program Tor

Ive recently started using the program Tor however, when i switch it on via the tor button in firefox, the internet does not work, it is connected successfully to tor though but then when i switch it off the internet works fine again. Is this due to the fact that i live in a communal residence so lots of people using the internet (also using a router) or some other reason? Please help.

Do you have the proxy configured correctly in firefox? Tor can connect but if your browser isn't connecting through the proxy (should be local 127.0.0.1) it won't work. Just look back through the setup guide and double check your steps. Hopefully that helps
