are you kidding? think about how much better an ipod for music is than everything else.. think what they could do with video... or maybe they could do nothing...

I'm still of the opinion that video on screens that small will never be a big market. It's a niche for a small group, I'll be shocked if it ever becomes mass market.

Look at the Archos and all the portable DVD players, they've been around for years and have never sold much.

Looking at how the market has reacted to the "iPod Craze," looks to me that if you stick the name iPod in front of any other word, it will sell. People just eat this iPod stuff up. And don't get me wrong, I'm one of them but I'd rather wait and see if the product first lives up to the quality expected from Apple and then make a purchase decision. This is why I still haven't gotten a Nano.

That said, I'd wait and see.

if such an ipod video could stream like local channels anywhere you are. That would be kewl. if it's just for music video, it's a waste of time.

the psp is doing well and studios are lining up to release movies in that format
but this is because sony was smart( doesnt happen often) and released a copy of spiderman 2 with eer psp that really caugt on..

apple will have to something like that.

While there might be an initial "cool" factor causing people to want to do that, I think the charm of watching movies will quickly wear off. The PSP is primarily a game machine, people aren't buying it for movies.

Besides, exactly how many PSPs have been sold in the US? Worldwide? probably not an astronomical number that brings the "tiny movie" market to critical mass.

maybe apple is thinking about tivo like software to sync with an ipod video.
with an av cable you could bring your tv / videos on the road.

MPEG4 only, and DRM to boot. I'll wait and see ... I don't see many early adopters of this one.

I voted yes at first but changed my mind. This looks like it would be perfect for when I am going to work on the train and waiting for the subway. I also gave my sister my powerbook so since I don't have a laptop right now this would be fine for car rides or plane rides to watch some stuff. I have a tv tuner which I encode with H.264 so it would work perfect for me

after seeing the new ipod, i think i will. i've only got a mini right now but i'd really like a 30 or 60 just to dump all my tunes onto. the photo feature is nice and with a tv out that might make it just a little more useful. would i use it for videos or tv shows? probably not, although music videos would be kinda cool.

i tried shrinking the player in itunes to about 2.5in and watched 'for the birds'. it wasn't too bad.

*edit
i take that back, it's a little too small.

There just has to be a new pricing. How many would go for a 4GB nano, knowing there's a 30GB video-compatible iPod for 50 bucks more. This is what it should be like (something like this, anyway):

iPod shuffle (512 MB) - $79
iPod shuffle (1 GB) - $129
iPod nano (2 GB) - $149
iPod nano (4GB) - $199
iPod (30 GB) - $299
iPod (60 GB) -$399

Most people don't look at the cost/gb ratio. Most customers look at what they like the style of the best, and if it has enough storage for their music collection that is what they get. I would never go for a nano or a shuffle because I need a ton of storage, size isn't a huge deal to me so the iPod is fine for me.

People who spend a lot of time in the gym and are active usually go for the shuffle
People who don't want to carry around a big mp3 player and are really into the style go for the nano
People whose main concern is a lot of music and functionality, even if it is larger go for the iPod

I will buy one because my 60 gig Ipod Photo is a TANK, its massive. I want to sell that one and get a nice slimmer 60 gig black Ipod (to go with my black Moto razr).

But it would be wicked if you could play avi's and other video format....

The only thing I'd disagree with on that guide is using H.264 instead of just MP4. The problem with H.264 is that the encoder that Handbrake uses for H.264 is not at all optimized for the Mac so it takes forever to encode compared to doing just MP4.

I like to do my encoding on long things overnight, so the benefit in size by using the H.264 is worth it for me since the encoding doesn't interfere with my work

The ipod video isn't *only* about video.
Its larger, better screen, thinner, oh well you know this stuff...
Its definetely worth it.
