I remember that my iphone 4's screen used to go blank when my ear was up against it (talking). Now it doesn't, and I keep accidentally hitting speaker and mute with my ear. Is there a way to turn this on/off? or something I'm missing? please help. Thanks!

That some like a sensor failure - contact Apple or your phone network

But try the usuals first:
Hard boot (hold the home and power buttons down til the screen blanks and the apple logo displays)
or
sync/backup, restore

Have you changed phone cases? Some of the tighter fitting phone cases conflict with the sensor which is behind the glass near the earpiece.

Also make sure your firmware is updated. 4.0 and 4.1 had sensor issues. This was corrected sometime around 4.2 or 4.2.1.
