Help with MS Excel

I am running MS Excel currently and working on a spreadsheet. I recall that I used to be able to see what I was typing in a cell at the top of the sheet and make any corrections there. I no longer see that available. Can anyone tell me how to get that function running. It is taking me forever to edit a cell any other way than deleting it and re-typing. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
