I saw this hdd from seagate and it advertises that the hard drive operates at 7200rpm and says that this speed will allow it to take advantage of the firewire 800 speed. Here's a link to view:

Mac portable drive | GoFlex Pro for Mac Ultra-Portable 7200RPM Drive | Seagate

Can someone chime in and confirm if this would actually yield any tangible benefit in the real world or if this is just marketing spin?

Many hard drives used in computers are 5400rpm. The hard drive you're considering is 7200rpm. That's all you need to know.

Faster rpm's generally mean faster read/write times to/from the HD.
