Is it possible to network two Macs wirelessly without internet access?

I'm working in a theatre venue that doesn't have wireless internet, and would love to network my two Macs (15" Pro & 11" Air) so that I can screen share and edit audio from the seating bank on my Air while my Pro is at the sound desk.

My air doesn't have an ethernet in and I can't get my paws on an ethernet to USB.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried setting up a peer to peer network between the two machines? Apple calls this computer to computer networking. It does not require net access or a router. All you need is two Macs with Airport cards. Check out How to Create a Wireless Ad-Hoc Network between Macs - Video - For Dummies.

There is sometimes a bit of a lag with screen sharing over wireless editing this way may take some getting used to depending upon how precise you need the cuts to be.

When I have two iMacs connected via ethernet through my router, I can see the other iMac and access it in Devices in Finder window.

Other iMac doesn't have Airport.

If I get another iMac that has Airport, or indeed any other unauthorised user access to my router, will I be able to see / access it ?
