2 macbooks but 2 different airport strengths

I have two macbook pro's in the same room and placed side by side, one is picking up full bars and quick internet connection. the second which was purchased only 2 months ago is only just picking up one bar very poorly (often says searching for avail networks every minute or so) and very sketchy and slow internet speed.

are there any settings or anything that can sort this out? or have i just bought a dud..

Sounds like a dud, if you bought it "NEW" from Apple get it back to them as it will be covered in the standard new device 12 month AppleCare.
