My wife is wanting to buy a new desktop mac, not sure which model yet.
The problem is that at the moment we have microsoft pc's connected to a wireless router. Can I use the same broadband connection or do I have to get another landline connected to my home?

A router will let you share your broadband connection without having to purchase another modem. So if you have a router and some open ethernet ports on the back of it, you should have no problems connecting your new mac. And if since you already have wireless setup, your future mac can just connect to that, if you include the Airport card onto your new mac.
