Hello,
I am planning on switching to an iMac, (my first ever Mac!), and need the CHEAPEST POSSIBLE SURROUND SOUND SPEAKER SOLUTION. Help?

I believe that iMacs have no 5.1 sound output options, so my best guess is you would need an external soundcard.

I havent got any experience with these, so we will have to wait for someone to chime in that has.

The newer imacs do have 5.1 but you must use an optical connection, which uses a mini Toslink adapter.
And of course a 5.1 stereo with an optical input.

All Intel Macs will pass thru 5.1 audio via optical from 5.1 sources such as movies via iTunes or watching DVDs via DVD player.

There is no Dolby (or other) that will give you a faux 5.1 from 2 channel sources - such as probably all of your music.

For that, you need to step up to a set of speakers with optical and Dolby built in.
Or, get an external sound card or an audio receiver with these capabilities.
