"Defiantly." I see this everywhere, whether it be on Facebook or across internet forums. Such a consistent mistake, but I don't know how people get hooked on spelling it like that; it's barely "definitely"... -_-

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
Two different words!

Defiantly
Adv. 1. defiantly - in a rebellious manner.

Definitely
adv
1. in a definite manner
2. (sentence modifier) certainly he said he was coming, definitely
sentence substitute.
unquestionably: used to confirm an assumption by a questioner.

I know! But at times, it's very clear to me that they mean to use "definitely" rather than "defiantly." I don't know, maybe I'm crazy and the only one who sees this everywhere. -_-

Hmm, I've never seen that misuse of "defiantly". I often see definitely misspelled "definately" or "defanitely".

Are you one of those grammer freaks? :p

To not get the two mixed up. I just remember that definitely has "finite" in it.

I actually see a lot of kids getting there and their mixed up more than anything else. ^-^"

This really used to irk me, but with so many people making the mistake, I've gotten rather jaded about it

Yeah, I don't think I've noticed this either. But I do tend to skim through text quickly.

I am guessing it is because of things like spellcheck changing stuff like defanitly to defiantly. Either way it is definitely frustrating...

Spellcheck is great and all, too bad it doesn't catch all the gramatical errors and word usage very well. >_>"

Pretty much my feeling as well. I haven't seen too many misuses of "defiantly" vs. "definitely"...but I certainly do see various misspellings of "definitely".

My opinion is:

- if you're e-mailing someone that you don't know well (coworkers, strangers, folks you may be involved with in a buy/sell process, etc.)
- as you develop a reputation & are a regular on an internet forum

...it's probably best to do your best when it comes to grammar, spelling, word usage.

Non-verbal communication (e-mails, forum posts, Facebook, etc.) is becoming (or has been) more & more prevalent...and bad habits developed & "practiced" everyday during electronic communications can sometimes inadvertently be used during more serious written/electronic communications.

It's kind of like burping, farting, or picking your nose..."Stupid is as stupid does!";)

I didn't mean that people misuse the meaning of "defiantly," but rather type it when they actually mean to type "definitely."

I don't know. Again, it could just be me.
