Have you guys heard of this at all? It's not necessarily anything new, but I've just decided to look into what it is today.

Diaspora is the social network that puts you in control of your information. You decide what you’d like to share, and with whom. You retain full ownership of all your information, including friend lists, messages, photos, and profile details.

Share what you want, with who you want.

It's a pretty neat open-source social networking project started by 4 guys at NYU. It's not a centralized server that you just sign up with and use. You can take the source and set up your own "seed" or "pod" and host your own diaspora powered server. Each "seed" or "pod" can communicate with others, so if someone is registered at a different site, you can still communicate with them! It's in alpha, and if you sign up through the official pod, it's invite only, but I've signed up on another pod.

This means you can set up your own pod and act as your own admin. I suppose the service and what it offers appeals to me. I'm wondering if anyone has tried it, or found it interesting at least.
