I have musical friends, every now and then they get together and play some great music. How much do I have to spend to get a semi decent recording of them playing?

Consider that I have been a little satisfied with the quality out of an iphone's mic on the voice recorder. So i'm not asking for studio quality, just something decent.

hanks for your input O:)

a Zoom H1 handy recorder. its a stereo mic.

itll never sound brilliant without multitracking.

Seconded. If you are lugging the MacBook around ANYWAY, I'd have suggested a blue snowball or something similar (fine USB mics). A Zoom H1 is a much better idea, however.
