Help with a old Macintosh 512k

Hey people,
I have a question. Now that I have acquired a old Macintosh 512k, I want to run software on it. I was looking around on this site for disk images.

I want to make the disks on a PC with Windows XP. (That is because I only have one computer with a floppy drive... and it is a PC.) So, is it possible to create MFS (Macintosh File System) floppies on a PC?

You do this on the Mac 512k itself...exactly like you would have done back in 1985:

- You start/boot the computer with a "System" floppy disk (a disk with a complete OS on it)
- then you eject the 'System Disk"...choose "Format Disk" from the proper drop down menu
- then insert the floppy disk you want to format
- the computer should begin formatting it

TRying to get data from a modern computer to a vintage one is very tricky.

Not only is the floppy format different, but the 512K uses a very old disk format that OSX would even have difficulty with, let alone Windows XP

Your best bet is to use what I would call a bridge mac, in my case getting data onto an Apple SE30 involved getting data from my Macbook to my G4 and then on to a SCSI portable disk, but the 512K doesn't even have SCSI.

You would be best off getting a bargain pre imac G3 running system like this, or something earlier but with ethernet running at least system 8.6, like a quadra or centris model - have a look around the low end mac site and do some shopping

You will also need some single sided 400K floppy disks, I dont know where you would get these

With a little work you should be able to network a 90s mac to your XP machine over ethernet - or connect it to a router directly, transfer disk images and get them onto 400K floppies to the Mac 512K

A 90s mac running system 9 should be very cheap on ebay
