If you paid $10,000 back then, they would deliver it to your house in a stretch limo, and a tuxedo wearing Apple Tech would set it up for you and make sure that everything was A-OK before he left.

These are very rare, in good condition. More of a collector's item than anything else. I do believe they used one of the first LCD screens, and back in '97 this was very high-tech. This is what probably lead to the opressive price tag. Even by today's standards, it's a sweet looking computer.

I remember when the TAMs came out, but I didn't know about the 10,000 dolar full service install. That's really awsome. That barrel looking thing next to the TAM is a BOSE woofer. The keyboard and trackpad are a single unit and are isimilar to the powerbook 1400. I think you can upgrade these things to a G3, but they won't run anything newer than OS 9.1. They come up on eBay from time to time, but they get bid way up by the collectors.

12" Apple PowerBook G4 (1.5GHz)
There was one on Seinfeld for the longest time.

As jhelm007 said, it was based on PowerBook components; desktop components were too large to fit in that form factor. Not many people sprang for the ~$10,000 personalized set up package, so it was also offered for less without setup. Later, to clear out inventory, they sold them for $2000; by then, the first (much, much faster) Power Mac G3s were about the same price.

The TAM was very much a showpiece for Apple; when it came out, Apple's computers were off-white boxes that couldn't be distinguished from a Dell or Compaq at ten feet.

Actually, the insides came from a Power Mac 5500/250, which was an All-In-One as well, but with a 15"CRT display. It even had a PCI-slot.
Runs quite good under 9.1, and with a maximum of 128MB, I wouldn't try any other OS on it anyway..
