Transfering Data Question

Hey all I'm new to the forum and I have a quick question for you guys. I go to school in Washington D.C. and I was hoping to find a way to transfer data from my Macbook Pro to my computer (which has a ton of memory) back in New York? Is this possible? I am pretty well tuned with computers. Just wondering if anything like this has been posted before.

What you can do is setup a VPN connection between your Mac in D.C. and the one in NY.
