Let's start with a question. I have almost exactly the same Powermac G5 as you...except that mine is a dual 1.8ghz model.

What video ports does your video card have on your Powermac G5?

Thanks,

- Nick

Thre is an adapter available for around $100.

Amazon.com: Apple M8661LL/B DVI to ADC Display Adapter 4038234011420: Electronics

To be honest they are now nine years old and present problems with slow booting and certain utilities such as Applejack and DiskWarrior not booting with the adapter. Maybe you can sell the 22" and buy a newer display with DVI connections.

Went from an Apple Studio Display to a BenQ 22" LED display and it is much more responsive regarding boot times etc.

Hi Nick I have two dvi 1 ports with 24 pin 3x8 plus the 4
Its the more square version compared to the old plastic cinema display ADC that has rounded plug, I have a picture but don't know how to ad it to this post,

The port on the G5 is the same as the connector in the picture you posted, DVI1 to ADC convertor if that a way of explaining sorry,

I believe I understand what you're G5 has...one DVI port & a 2nd port that sort of looks like DVI but a little different (I think that your video card has one single link DVI port & one dual link DVI port). My Powermac G5 obviously has a different video card...mine has one DVI & 1 ADC port.

I really don't think that you're going to find an ADC to DVI connector (the opposite of the one I posted in the other thread...and you linked here as well). At least I haven't seen one.

Harry linked a more elaborate adapter (which I also have) which will allow you to use your older Macintosh monitor with your Powermac G5...and these used to be sold at the Apple Store up until 1-2 years ago...and they used to cost $99.99.

But now they are hard to find...and you can pay anywhere from $150 to $300 or more. These sort of prices are just insane...and for the same money you could buy 1-2 much more modern LCD displays with DVI ports/cables.

The only other thing I can suggest is (if you REALLY need to use this older ADC equipped monitor)...is try to find an older video card from an older Powermac G5. I think that almost every video card used in slightly older Powermac G5's (slightly older than your's)...has 1 DVI port & 1 ADC port. This might be a less expensive option.

I hope this helps,

- Nick

And should the G5 be a 2GHz Dual Core model, you will require a PCI-E card and none came with ADC connectors alas.

I don't suppose the video card in my G4 would fit the G5,

I Think I like the look of the BenQ 22" and if Its mac compatible Great, G5 2ghz model

I shall retire my G4 to menial tasks such as internet and printing

Thanks Pigoo3 & Harryb, I have taken both your good advice,

Blod

Ahh...excellent point Harry!:) I keep forgetting that the Powermac G5 2.0ghz came in both dual-processor (PCI) & a dual-core (PCIe). Same for the 2.3ghz Powermac G5.

I don't suppose the video card in my G4 would fit the G5,

It's a little complex. Many (if not all) of the Powermac G4's had PCI expansion slots...but the video card is usually in a 4x AGP slot. The Powermac G5's had PCI, PCIx, and PCIe expansion slots...and the video card is usually in an 8x AGP slot (different from the 4x AGP slot in a Powermac G4).

So I would say that the G4 card won't fit into G5.:( Nice idea though!:)

Does this monitor come with a video cable? Just use what comes with it.

Unless it only comes with a "VGA" cable. The DVI cable that comes with it will fit one of your G5's ports.:)

If no video cable...I would just get any "standard" DVI cable you would find in an electronics store. It will fit one of the ports on the G5.:)

Can't help with the CRT monitor but VGA to DVI can be a little more than iffy.

When you purchase the BenQ the lead will have DVI connetors eaqch end, one into the monitor and one to your G5 graphics card. Do not worry about the DVA/DVI -D and DVI-I thing. One simply means analogue, D is digital, the newer format is Interface which will wrk with both.
