Looking at the Tamron SP AF70-200mm F/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro Lens for Canon for my Canon XS. Good or bad choice for indoor basketball pictures and outdoor football and baseball pictures.

Well, it has a decent zoom range which will be great and a wide aperture all the way through so it'll be great for indoor and outdoor. I don't have any personal experience with this lens so I can't vouch for it's image quality...
One thing you'll definitely want to check before you buy is it's focusing speed. If it's slow to focus, you'll have a whole lot of trouble with it. If it's fast, it'll be perfect for what you need it for.
