Connecting with bluetooth.

Your Mac's Specs
IMAC 20 inch dual core. 16 GB ipad.
I've tried to connect to my iMac and phone from the pad and although it finds the devices it says it cannot connect, is this normal.

That's easy, you can't

Google it or read your manual.

the bluetooth profiles on the iPad do not support connecting the iPad to an iMac via bluetooth to do anything. What you said happens is what is expected
