garageband 9 - wheres my stompboxes?

In screenshots and within the help in GB9 theres these pics of guitar tracks and stompboxes laid out in front of amps - u can click on them and twiddle the knobs, but all i can see in my version is a flat graphic with a blue pond ripple effect and some sliders. How do i get the stompboxes to display? Can't seem to create a guitar track either, its labeled as real instrument or software instrument.???

aah, sorted with a clean reinstall - looks like logic express had overwritten some of the stuff.
