my display won't sleep

I bought a mac mini and my display won't sleep. I am using the dell display from the pc i had. Help! The display is set to sleep, but when the display and computer are supposed to sleep after the screen saver runs, the computer sleeps and the display goes into a test mode like it would be if it were not hooked-up to anything.
